The growing pains that the news industry has been subjected to since the beginning of the digital age have emerged from the loss of revenue associated with the internets free-of-charge nature.
This free nature has also, however, created many opportunities for additional content that wouldn’t have been possible in the pre-digital world.
Local Sunshine Coast paper, the Coast Reporter, decided to start a podcast as a means of further exploring and explaining topics they covered in print, while also finding a use for content that would have otherwise gone to the wayside.
“It gives us an opportunity to use some material that maybe won’t make it into the print edition or isn’t suitable always for a standard online type presentation,” says Sean Eckford, reporter for the Coast Reporter.
Likewise, Vancouver based media outlet Vancouver Is Awesome, were drawn by the added value they could create with the equipment they had at their disposal.
“It would be a wasted opportunity for us to have this studio here and not use it,” says Bob Kronbauer, editor-in-chief of Vancouver Is Awesome.
