The thought of a second sports radio station in Vancouver seemed impossible a few years ago, but a new network in town is changing the narrative.
Sportsnet 650 went on air this past September, and according to program director Craig Macewen, they are bringing a unique blend of seasoned veterans and fresh voices to the city’s airwaves.
“It was all by design,” Macewen says. “I felt it was time in this market to hear some different people.”
No matter their success on the ice, the Vancouver Canucks are the top brand in town according to Macewen, which is why he says their official broadcast partnership with the team sets 650 apart from other well-known outlets.
New brands always find bumps in the road, and Macewen says their biggest hurdle is the presence of TSN 1040 Vancouver, an established sports radio station that has dominated the city for over two decades.
In an industry experiencing continuous layoffs, Macewen says this venture is important because it creates job opportunities in a profession cutting down. The longtime sportsnet employee hopes the growth of 650 allows for expanded employment openings.
